Inspections

To ensure safe and efficient operation of your fireplace or heating system, the National Fire Protection Association recommends annual inspections of chimneys, fireplaces, and vents.

Inspections are classified into three levels and cover specific items depending on the appliance or venting system.

Level 1

Inspection for soundness of chimney and flue, as well as appliance installation and connections. Checks for obstruction and combustible deposits. Chimney Checkers recommends a Level 1 Inspection as follows:

  • Annual Inspection
  • Routine Flue Cleaning
  • Direct Replacement of a Similar Appliance

Level 2

Level 1 plus inspections of portions of chimney exterior and interior in attics, crawl spaces and basements for appropriate clearances of combustibles. Includes visual inspection of interior surfaces and joints of all flue liners within the chimney. Chimney Checkers uses Chimney-Scan, a closed circuit internal evaluation system to search for possible hidden dangers. Chimney Checkers recommends a Level 2 Inspection as follows:

  • Upon any sale or transfer of property
  • After an operating malfunction or an external event is likely to have caused damage to the chimney
  • Addition or removal of one or more connected appliances, or the replacement of appliance with one of a different type, a different input rating or a different efficiency
  • Prior to relining or replacement of the flue lining

Level 3

Levels 1 and 2 plus addresses the construction and condition of concealed or hidden portions of the chimney and flue. May require removal or destruction (as necessary) of portions of the chimney or building structure when required to gain access to areas that are the subject of the inspection.

  • Where necessary for the investigation of an incident which has caused damage to the chimney or building
  • Where a hazard is detected or suspected as a result of a Level 1 or a Level 2 inspection and the suspected hazard cannot be fully evaluated without access to concealed areas
  • A Level 3 inspection may be required when the construction of all or part of the chimney is deemed critical to the renewed or continued use of the chimney due to potential concealed defects
